4 Influential Asian Pacific Americans

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is one of the United States’ observances. Signed into law by former US president Jimmy Carter in 1978, the month of May is chosen to promote awareness and appreciation of AAPIs’ diverse culture, history, and achievements.

During the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, events, exhibits, and programs are held across the country to honor the rich history and diversity of the AAPI community and raise awareness of the important contributions they have made to American society. It’s also an opportunity to recognize the ongoing challenges and discrimination faced by the AAPI community and to work towards a more equitable and inclusive society for all.

NeedThat gives you a short list of notable individuals who have made significant contributions to the AAPI community you should know of:

1. Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris became the first woman and first Asian American elected as Vice President of the United States. Born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, her mixed heritage became her source of pride in the significance of this historical breakthrough as the Asian American community is underrepresented in the country’s politics and government.

Throughout her career, Harris has been a strong advocate for social justice and equal rights for all Americans. She is a supporter of the Asian American community, and vocal towards hate crime prevention, immigrant rights, and representation in the government.

2. Bruce Lee

You might have seen him in his iconic yellow tracksuit and his signature kicks with matching battle cries. Legendary martial artist, actor, and filmmaker Bruce Lee is widely regarded as a cultural icon in both the Asian American and global communities.

Having experienced racism and discrimination in Hollywood, Lee managed to break the barriers and became one of the first Asian American actors to achieve mainstream success. His notable films Enter the Dragon and Fists of Fury are two of his groundbreaking masterpieces of all time which helped popularize martial arts around the globe.

3. I.M Pei

From the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris to the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., I.M. Pei‘s architectural masterpieces have captured the world’s attention. He is more than that for he is a trailblazer who paved the way for other Asian American architects and designers and broke down the barriers in the industry.

The Guangzhou-born architect made a profound impact on his field which earned him numerous awards and accolades, including the Pritzker Prize which is considered the Nobel Prize for architecture. He is also a recipient of the Presidential Medal for Freedom which was awarded to him by former U.S. president George H.W. Bush in 1992.

4. Steven Yeun

Who wouldn’t know Steven Yeun, especially when the hit television series “The Walking Dead” is mentioned? Born in South Korea, Yeun grew up in the United States. He studied psychology at Kalamazoo College in Michigan before moving to Chicago to pursue acting.

Yeun has appeared in several other television shows and films, including “Okja”, “Burning”, and “Minari”. He has received critical acclaim for his performances, including multiple award nominations for his role in the 2020 drama film “Minari”.

Yeun is renowned for his activism and advocacy for Asian American rights, particularly for their representation in media and society in general. He has also spoken out against issues like racism and xenophobia towards Asians and for more diversity and inclusivity in the entertainment industry.
