Amazon’s Newest $250 Ring Drone Review: Expected to Ship in 2021

Ring Always Home Cam

Amazon’s latest reveal of Ring’s Always Home Cam drone lets you see what’s going on inside your home anywhere in the world!

Ring Drone Replaces Traditional Security Cameras

The greatest benefit of the drone is that you can set up a camera system inside your house without the hassle of setting up multiple static cameras (data/electrical wiring, data storage space, etc.).  Although the Ring drone can’t completely compare to a fully set up security camera network, it offers a pretty good solution at a fraction of the cost.  The average cost to install security cameras averages anywhere from ~$680 to $2124 (according to HomeAdvisor)…so the Ring Drone is an incredibly affordable solution.

How the Ring Drone Works

The Ring Always Home Cam drone rests in a boxlike device to charge and takes flight when in use. When you first receive the drone, you will have to map out your home using the drone which will set a flight path.  However, the device is fully automated so you won’t be able to control the drone with your phone.  Once the path is set up, the drone follows the path when commanded or triggered by the Ring Alarm Security system.  For example, if someone breaks into your house and the security system is triggered, the Ring Drone automatically takes flight and looks around to take an HD video recording.

You can also watch via an HD live stream using your phone or laptop device.  The battery life of the drone is only 5 minutes and requires a 1-hour charge time. This seems like a short time but we’ll have to see if a 5-minute flight once an hour is enough for most users when the device launches.

Data Privacy Concerns

The Ring Always Home Cam Drone may improve people’s lives and increase home security, but many people are especially concerned due to data privacy.  All the video recordings that the Ring Drone takes will be fed into Amazon’s Artificial Intelligence systems.

In Conclusion, TLDR

  • HD Live Streaming
  • Battery Life – 5-Minute Runtime with 1 Hour Charge time
  • Can’t manually control the drone like an R/C Car
  • Triggers with Ring Alarm Security Kit
  • End to End Encryption for security (like email encryption systems)
  • Can be triggered to fly via devices – Set on a specifically designated path
  • Video recordings will be fed into Amazon’s AI software
