Since last month is Pride Month, we want to celebrate the progress that’s been made since the very first Pride event on June 28, 1970, one year after the Stonewall Uprising. That rebellion truly left a legacy on the world, and now, 51 years later, we’re still celebrating that historical moment and fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community to live openly as themselves in society.
It’s no secret that members of this group still face barriers to entry into society, including creating their own businesses. However, we can see that slowly changing as the world recognizes the importance of allowing LGBTQ+ people to live authentically.
In honor of Pride Month 2021, we wanted to celebrate and support some LGBTQ+-owned makeup lines that also happened to be vegan and plant-based that are making positive impacts on the community, our planet, and the animals.
1. Dragun Beauty
Nikkita Dragun is a makeup influencer and overall superstar with over 3.6 million followers on YouTube. She has become an icon for many trans people like herself because she’s completely unapologetically herself. When she was younger, she said she would escape into her fantasy world through makeup, and lead her down a path to create a makeup brand called Dragun Beauty that’s 100% vegan and 100% ravishing.
2. NOTO Botanics
Gloria Noto was a makeup artist for 12 years before founding NOTO Botanics, which was created to serve “queer bodies, non-binary bodies, trans bodies, and more BIPOC bodies.” What I love about this brand is not just that it’s inclusive while being cruelty and animal-free, but that it also gives back to many LGBTQ+ organizations, including LGBT Youth Center and The Okra Project.
3. Fluide
Isabella Giancarlo and Laura Kraber founded Fluide as a statement against the sexism they’ve faced in their lives and the discrimination people in the queer community have faced for far too long. All their vegan, paraben-free, and cruelty-free cosmetics are designed to be worn by people of all races, backgrounds, and genders.
4. Jecca Blac
Jessica Blackler founded the vegan, cruelty-free, and gender-free makeup line Jecca Blac after working as a makeup artist and recognizing that many trans people weren’t being catered to in the beauty industry. Now her mission is to create a safe space for all people, especially trans people, to wear and experiment with makeup. All of her products are for “all expressions, genders, sexualities, abilities, pronouns, shapes, and sizes.” Not only does she create conscious cosmetics, but Jessica also will be hosting the 2021 Trans Festival in Covent Garden in London.
Final Thoughts
This is by no means an extensive list of all the vegan and plant-based LGBTQ+-owned makeup lines out there, so if I missed any of your favorites, leave them in the comments!
